The Forensic Science Department of the University for Development Studies (UDS) hosted an interesting online lecture that brought the negative repercussions of galamsey, or unlawful small-scale mining, into stark relief. The Forensic Investigation for National Development (FIND-GH) has an esteemed toxicologist named Yakubu Adam who sheds light on the concerning association between galamsey activities and the increasing rate of renal failure.

Possessing extensive knowledge of toxicology, Mr. Adam explored the scientific principles behind mercury toxicity, a common problem linked to galamsey procedures. He provided strong evidence that the increasing number of renal dysfunction diagnoses among impacted people is a result of mercury exposure from these illicit mining operations.
